The Castle

One of the 12 remaining towers of Framlingham Castle

Framlingham Castle is located in Framlingham, Suffolk, not far from the south-eastern coast of England. Although its interior is almost completely ruined, the exterior remains an impressive example of wall-and-tower defences. Its 12 crenellated square towers (the 13th has collapsed), adorned with ornate Tudor chimneys, are connected by a high curtain wall with a walkway along the top. In accordance with other castles of the area, the walls and towers are covered with native flint for extra strength.

The 'mural' towers, built into the castle wall, are hollow and contained planks that could be removed if attackers scaled part of the wall. This would isolate the compromised section.

The lower bailey features a prison tower and gatehouse that are attached to the curtain wall. A wide, deep ditch and an outer bailey complete the castle's structure. This castle is unusual in that it has no keep - the only defences considered necessary were the strong walls, high towers, and outer earthworks.
